Our History

The Architect of Brézème’s Revival

In 1981, with only one hectare of land (2.5 acres), Jean-Marie and Sylvette Lombard created the Domaine Lombard estate. The Lombards were among the first to initiate the revival of the Brézème terroir, raising the profile of this region, encouraging other growers to plant here, and set about expanding the estate over the next two decades.

The 2017 and 2007 vintages of our Eugene de Manicault wine, named for the man who helped preserve the Brézème vineyards

When Jean-Marie retired in 2012, he handed over the estate to a “domaine of friends”. Philippe Sapet, Denis Guillot, and Julien and Emmanuelle Montagnon share the same values and the same vision of wine. At Domaine Lombard, we say that great wines begin with great relationships. Friendship and trust make up the foundation of this estate and its commitment to carrying on the Lombard legacy.

Originally from the Livron area, winemakers Julien and Emmanuelle Montagnon (J&E Montagnon) have brought new vision to the estate and introduced more natural grape growing and winemaking practices. The estate is now double certified in organic farming and biodynamic agriculture.

They have also continued to expand the estate, following Jean-Marie’s lead, and have replanted some of the most beautiful parcels in the region. Today, Domaine Lombard covers 16 hectares (39 acres). Itis the only estate in the region to have planted grapes in all five named vineyards (lieux-dits) in Brézème.

Since 2012, our estate has benefited from increased trade activity and interest in wines from the Northern Rhône. We select only the best grapes from the finest soils to make our wines. Then we blend and age them to reflect our understanding and vision of this historic appellation. We look forward to sharing the unique story and terroir of Brézème with you!
